The streets of Rugby will be transformed into an outdoor treasure hunt in celebration of World Book Day. This year’s event, running to 15 March, is especially significant as it forms part of the National Year of Reading.
Rugby Borough Council has partnered with High Street Safari, experts in turning public spaces into interactive adventures, to bring an innovative augmented reality treasure hunt to the town centre. This trail is supporting the World Book Day charity’s mission to improve lives through championing the enjoyment of reading.
Families are invited to hunt for ten ‘book zones’ hidden in shop windows. Using only a smartphone, explorers can scan markers to see 3D characters. From brave astronauts to mythical unicorns, that leap into the real world. Each stop features a hidden secret letter, found by taking selfies with the characters. Families who find all ten can solve the mystery word and complete the trail.
The trail also allows children to take selfies with each of the 3D characters to create a permanent digital souvenir of their adventure.
Cllr Maggie O’Rourke, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for Partnerships and Wellbeing, said: “We're very excited to work alongside High Street Safari and bring this trail to Rugby residents.
“This is a great opportunity for individuals and families to get involved with World Book Day in an immersive and creative way, shaping the future generations view on reading in a positive light.”
Cllr Neil Sandison, Rugby Borough Council Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Partnerships and Wellbeing, said: “This interactive experience allows young people to engage with reading and books in a modern way.
“I wish you the best of luck in completing the trail adventure.”
Stephen Blackwell, Project Director at High Street Safari, added:
“By bringing these characters to life in 3D, we're helping children engage with reading in a way that feels modern and exciting. We’re proud to work alongside World Book Day to put books at the heart of the community.”
The Rugby World Book Day Treasure Hunt is completely free for all families and will run to 15 March. No app download is required. Families simply need a smartphone with a camera to take part.
To start the hunt, families should visit Rugby Visitor Centre to collect their trail guides and scan their first marker.
